3D color printing has been a rare feature, only available on specialized machines that have produced mixed results so far. The latest addition to XYZprinting is the da Vinci Color, a color 3D printer . The innovation is in the 3DColorJet technology, combining inkjet printing and 3D printing by melt deposition , also called Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF).
The 3DColorJet technology mixes and cures CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) ink droplets onto a new filament type (Color PLA or CPLA), which allows accurate color printing through printed layers in products 3D finishes. The CPLA filament allows absorption of inkjet droplets and is also more robust than the ordinary PLA, making it perfect for tooling and impact resistance.
The 3D da Vinci Color Printer is about a 61 cm cube, and is ideal for professionals, despite its small size. The construction volume of 19.81 x 19.81 x 14.98 cm is more than enough for most internal prototypes. Adding color to 3D printing could be a significant benefit for models that would otherwise require post-production minutia.
From creation to printing
Models made by a 3D tool or camera could be produced and reproduced ready for immediate use. Architects and designers could thus print very realistic building models, ranging from landscaping, to furniture and people to include to support the model. Cartoon characters or fantasy universes could also be created by fans and collectors in their authentic colors or with custom designs.
The latest version of the XYZmaker application (for Mac, Windows and Linux) is designed to allow all users, even beginners, to easily create 3D models that can be sent to da Vinci Color. The application can also convert other types of files, allowing models created on other software to be printed by this color 3D printer. Thousands of 3D models are available for free in the XYZprinting gallery and can be used and edited for any project.
